A Guide To Choosing Lipstick Shades Based On Your Undertones

A Guide To Choosing Lipstick Shades Based On Your Undertones

There’s nothing better than the perfect lipstick shade to boost your mood & your confidence. This universally appealing makeup product is capable of taking your look from a 10 to a 100 with just one swipe of colour. However, that is only if you choose the right lipstick shades for Indian skin tone. While we’re all about experimenting and trying new looks, when picking lipstick shades for Indian skin tone, you need to be very particular about what goes & what doesn’t. But just considering your indian skin tone isn’t enough; there’s more to choosing lipsticks than just having a swatch party. And while it does seem like a herculean task, all you need to do is understand your skin tone & your undertones better.

There are three broad categories of undertones: warm, cool & neutral. All you have to do is differentiate them and understand which category you fall under. Sounds easy, right?

Here are 3 simple ways to determine your skin’s undertone:

  1. Checking your vein’s colour

This is the simplest trick in the book for figuring out your undertones. Test it out by checking the colour of your veins on the inner side of your wrist. If your veins appear blue or purple, then you have a cool undertone. If they appear green, then you have a warm undertone. If they appear to be a mix of both, then you have a neutral undertone. Test this in a natural light setting to get it 100% right!

  1. Gold or silver jewellery?

The colour of your jewellery that suits you tells a lot about your skin’s undertone as well. If you have a warm undertone, gold jewellery will complement your skin tone better; whereas if you have a cool undertone, silver jewellery will look better on your skin. If you fall under the neutral undertone, then you’re going to have more options to choose from (both for jewellery & lipsticks, wink!)

  1. White paper test

Another simple test to figure out your skin’s undertone is to hold a piece of white paper beside your face, and check. If your face looks yellow or golden beside the paper, then you have a warm undertone. If it looks pinkish or slightly blue, then you have a cool undertone. And if it looks balanced, then you have a neutral undertone.

Now that you’ve figured out how to determine your skin’s undertone, it’s time to figure out the ideal lipstick shades for Indian skin tone

Lipstick Shades for Warm Undertone

For warm undertones, opt for lipstick shades that are warm too. The warmth of the lipstick will help enhance the natural warmth of your skin. Look for shades with orange, red, peach and brown tones. Think terracotta or brick reds, pretty coral shades, and subtle brown shades to complement your warm undertone.

Lipstick Shades for Cool Undertone

Similar to lipstick shades for warm undertone, cool-toned lipsticks complement cool undertones. Look for lipsticks with a hint of blue, purple or pink to help flatter your natural complexion without making it look washed out. Hot pink, fuchsia pink, purples, mauve, berry tones, and bright reds best complement cool undertones. These help brighten up your look.

Lipstick Shades for Neutral Undertone

If you fall under the neutral undertone category, then guess what? You’re the luckiest of all because you have more shades to experiment with! Neither warm nor cool, just the perfect balance of both. But don’t get ahead of yourself and think just every shade is perfect for you. As awesome as it sounds to have more options, it can also be very tricky to pick the perfect shade. Go for shades like soft browns, nude shades, light pinks and maybe a classic red once in a while to add a pop of colour.

Now, if you think you’ve got the perfect lipstick shades for Indian skin tone, don’t get too ahead of yourself. Just eyeing and buying the shade isn’t enough; you’ve got to put it to the test so you know you’re getting more bang for your bucks! Here’s how to test out your lipstick shades.

  • Swatch on your wrist

The simplest trick in the book is this one! Apply a thin, even layer of the lipstick shade on the back of your hand. If you’re swatching multiple colours at once, then apply them slightly apart from each other to be able to differentiate between them. If the shade pops on your arm, then it has a warm undertone, and if it looks muted, then it’s a cool-toned one. Hold your arm at a distance to see how the colours look on your skin. Want to take your testing up a notch? Softly blend out the edges and blur them to create a soft colour or shade variations of the same lipstick shade.

  • Different light settings

Your lipstick shade’s look depends heavily on the lighting situation. Warm and cool-toned lights have a different impact on lipstick shades as they can change the colour of your skin. The best way to test your lipstick shade is to test it under natural light, as it will bring out the best of your lipstick shade. Avoid harsh lights as they can distort the colour.

If you’re still confused about the shade you’ve picked, here’s another way to test out the lipstick shade -

Apply a swatch of colour on a bright blue surface, if the colour sits well on it and complements the blue colour of the surface, then the lipstick is of a cool tone. Whereas if the lipstick shade looks too bright against the blue, then it has a warm tone.

You’ve picked your shade, you’ve tested your shades, but you still want to step out of the comfort ‘undertone’ zone and experiment with a different shade? Here’s what could happen in this case:

If a person with a warm undertone wears a cool-toned lipstick their skin will look pale and washed out. Similarly if a person with a cool undertone wears a warm-toned lipstick, it may look overpowering and take away all the attention from the rest of your look.
