Swipe and slay, that’s the only way to apply mascara like a pro, right? Or so we think it is.

If you think you know how to apply mascara like a pro, think again. While everyone loves the look of those beautiful long lashes swathed in mascara, not everyone can get it right. Flawless mascara application is something that requires practice, precision, and of course, the right product, like the Simply Nam Clean Lashes Waterproof Mascara

This waterproof mascara is perfect for daily use. It is the best mascara for beginners and professionals; thanks to its unique waterproof formula. But that’s not it, there’s more that makes this mascara special, says celebrity makeup artist Namrata Soni, “This mascara is special because it comes with a unique comb brush that is designed keeping in mind that you don’t always need to use cotton buds or spoolies to separate your lashes.”

A big thing about all the mascara application tutorials you’ll see online is that they miss out on a very important step — ie, curling your lashes. For applying mascara like a pro and getting those long, lifted lashes, it is crucial to know how to curl your lashes. To break it down for you, here’s how Namrata Soni does it:

“First up, make sure there is no oil on your lashes before curling them. Use a towel to remove any excess oil and then go in with your curler. Take all your lashes and see how perfectly they fit on the comb of the curler. Pulse it ten times and see how beautifully lifted your eyes look after. Repeat the same for the other eye and then go in with your waterproof mascara.”

Sounds simple, right?

Now, here’s your go-to, easy step-by-step guide on mascara application for beginners, which is 100% Namrata Soni-approved!

Step 1:

Curl your lashes with a lash curler before applying the mascara for an extra lift.

Step 2:

This is the most crucial step of applying any type of mascara. Remove excess product from the wand until the comb bristles are clearly visible at the container's edge, indicating you’ve picked up sufficient product.

Step 3:

Start applying your mascara from the base and move upward in a right & left motion on your lashes. Start applying from the outer corner and gradually move to the inner corner of the eye.

Tip: Make sure the bristles are facing your lashes, not upward or down, they should be straight against your lashes.

Step 4:

Clean your wand every time you dip it in the container to ensure you don’t get any excess product on your eyelids.

Step 5:

If you do get mascara around your eyelids by mistake, just take a cotton bud and move it in a circular motion to remove it without smudging your makeup. Or you can dampen the tip of our Velvet Microfiber Makeup Sponge and gently dab and remove the extra mascara.

And there you have it — big, beautiful, voluminous lashes!

Now that we’ve gone through the basics of how to curl your lashes and mascara application for beginners, let’s dive into the things you should (and should not) do to get long lashes with mascara

  • #1 No extra pushing or pumping
  • We often see people vigorously pumping up the amount of product on their mascara wand and applying coats after coats of it in the name of touch ups. If you’ve done this too, then it’s time to stop! Whether it’s your first coat or a touch up, for natural looking mascara application all you need to do is follow the simple steps above & you’ll be good to go!

  • #2 Invest in a lash primer for mascara
  • Just like a base primer, a lash primer goes a long way in making your mascara last longer. This one added step before applying mascara can elevate your lash game and give you the look you desire. If you’ve got small lashes, then we highly recommend using a lash primer before you go in with a waterproof mascara to add more length and volume.

  • #3 Allow it time to dry
  • The key to prevent mascara smudging and/or clumping is to let it dry. “It takes at least 5 minutes for your mascara to dry, depending on the formulation of the product you’re using”, says Namrata Soni. She further explains why, “So anything that gives you volume and length is also going to take a little bit time to dry because it’s a heavier product.” Wait for the first coat to dry completely before you go in with the second one for that natural looking mascara application

  • #4 Apply mascara on both sides of your lashes
  • This is something most people skip out on doing. If you’re applying mascara for volume, then this step is non-negotiable. Applying mascara on the top of your lashes can be a bit messy, but there’s no mascara mishap a cotton bud can’t solve. Keep a cotton bud and a gentle makeup remover handy to undo mascara mistakes.

  • #5 Powder your lashes
  • This one’s for all the professionals out there. If you want the mascara to last longer and prevent mascara smudging, the easiest way to do that is dab some loose powder on your lashes. Use an eyeshadow brush to powder your lashes gently and make them look more voluminous.

  • #6 Use a cocktail of mascara formulations
  • Yes, that’s right! You can always mix two formulations depending on the look you want. If you want both length and volume, then you can layer two formulations that cater to both those needs. Lucky for you, the Simply Nam Waterproof Mascara is one of the best mascara for lengthening and volume, so you can get the job done with just one product.

If you’ve read this far, then we’re sure you’ve got the tips and tricks of flawless mascara application down to the T. So here’s some additional tips that might come in handy when applying mascara like a pro

    1. Twirl the wand out of the container: Don’t pump the wand in and out of the container vigorously. Instead, twirl the wand lightly while taking it out that way you’ll get just enough product to apply.
    2. Never use an expired product: Expired mascara tends to clump and separate making application a task. Also, it is best to avoid using it around your sensitive eye area to avoid infections.
    3. Don’t throw away dried up mascara: Don’t waste a perfectly good mascara pack just because it’s dried up. All you need to do is close the lid tightly and dip it in hot water to allow the product to melt and loosen up, making it ready for application.
    4. Use a lash growth serum: If you think a mascara isn’t cutting it to give you the desired length and volume, invest in a lash growth serum. This will help provide healthier, fuller lashes that will not fall out.
That’s about it! Hope this answers all your questions about flawless mascara application. Now all that’s left is for you to rock those bold, beautiful lashes!
